Make things on your 3D Printer

You print small items, often personalised ones, on a home 3D printer and sell them one at a time on Etsy or a similar shop for roughly $8 to $60 each.

What the job actually is

You use a desktop 3D printer, now sold for a few hundred dollars, to make physical products such as name signs, desk organisers, lamps and flexible toys, and you ship them to buyers. The printer works unattended for an hour or more per item. Your own work is designing, finishing, packing and dealing with customers. Most sellers start on Etsy, which since June 2025 only allows 3D-printed items made from the seller's own original design.

How the work goes

  1. 1

    Design or license a model

Make your own design, or a personalised version of one, in CAD software. Selling on Etsy requires an original design. For other channels you can buy a commercial licence from a designer, for example through a MakerWorld membership.

  2. 2

    Slice and print

Load the file into the printer's slicer software and let it run. A small item takes about 90 minutes of unattended printing on an entry-level machine.

  3. 3

    List it

Post the item on Etsy with photos and personalisation options. Each listing costs $0.20 and renews every four months.

  4. 4

    Print to order and finish

When an order comes in, print the buyer's version, remove supports, check quality and pack it. This is the 15 to 20 minutes of hands-on time in each order.

  5. 5

    Ship and collect

Charge the buyer for shipping. Etsy takes 6.5% of the order total plus 3% and $0.25 in payment processing, and pays out the rest.

How to get your first paid job

  1. 1

Choose one personalised product you can design yourself

Name plates, name letters or custom signs are good starting points. Etsy only accepts original designs, and personalised versions of these sell at $15 to $35. Learn enough CAD to put a buyer's text onto your own base model.

  2. 2

Buy an entry-level printer and run test prints

A Bambu Lab A1 mini was $199 on 2026-10-27. Print 10 to 20 copies of your product to find the real print time, filament use and failure rate before you set a price.

  3. 3

Price one unit from its parts

Add Etsy's 6.5% plus 3% and $0.25, about $1.50 of filament, about $0.75 of packaging and the postage, and charge the buyer for shipping. Use the $24.99 worked example as a model.

  4. 4

Open an Etsy shop with 5 to 10 listings

Each listing costs $0.20. Use clear photos of real finished prints and turn on personalisation so buyers can type in their name or text.

  5. 5

Get your first paid orders from people you know while Etsy picks up

Send the listing to friends, family and local groups. First Etsy sales typically come in months one or two. Every order is also a chance to photograph a finished piece for the listing.

The catch

You need a design that is yours. Etsy has required 3D-printed items to come from the seller's original design since June 2025, and many free model files are for personal use only. The easiest way in is personalisation: names, signs and custom sizes are original by their nature and sell for more than generic items. For any model you didn't design, a MakerWorld commercial licence costs a creator-set $3 to $300 a month and lets you sell prints through channels other than Etsy.

Where to sign up

Before you start

  • A desktop FDM 3D printer (an entry-level Bambu Lab A1 mini was $199 on 2026-10-27)
  • PLA filament, packaging and postage
  • Enough CAD skill to make an original or personalised design, because Etsy requires one for 3D-printed items
  • An Etsy seller account (or a commercial licence for any model you didn't design, if you sell elsewhere)
  • Space where the printer can run for hours, and a few weeks of test prints to learn its failure rate
